As an aspiring artist, I find I have to agree with Jules. My experience in the art community locally and online, is that alot of people use "This Is MY STYLE" as an excuse to avoid putting in the time and effort it would take to improve artistically.

Art is not whatever you want to be art, and I blame the conceptual artists of the '60s and '70s for this. Art isn't whatever you call art, art has rules and standards. You can't meet those standards? You're a substandard artist.

Rant Rant Rant, Grumble Grumble Grumble.

All that aside: Three cheers for nine-tenths of the internet lacking a basic understanding of civil liberties. "I don't like what you say, therefore you are a bad person and shouldn't be allowed to talk any more!"

And a genuine Hip-hip-hooray for Jules. Speak freely, and don't mind the plebian masses.
And another for Prestwick, for taking a measured, rational, enlightened stance to all of this. I know whenever one of my associates/friends is attacked it sets my blood boiling, and I have a hard time reigning myself in.

Jules is a tough girl. She is a classic Latin matriarch if I ever saw one. And even under the howls and cries of the hysterical masses, she did go on to calmly clarify what she said which illicited no response from the comics she had mentioned.

What happened was that the culprit decided to post a long rant about the article, show how displeased he was about it and then linked to the article. Basically saying "look what she said about my webcomic! This is an outrage, its horrible! Go look for yourselves!"

Oi, internet drama. I suppose the bravest thing about putting content on the internet isn't having it open for people to see, but the little comment link at the bottom of it.

The sad thing is, I don't think they really got the point. I didn't think what she wrote was supposed to be a critic piece, just a bit of instruction. Maybe a sidehand remark, but she has a valid point. A stick comic or whatever it is that has everyone's arse twisted -is- lazy. It's simplistic, that's what makes it what it is, and just because someone finds a way to successfully convey a message with it doesn't mean it's a viable way to do that; it just means their way of doing it is extraordinary.

A lot of it (that I bothered to glance over, I can only make it so far), seemed like just fans of a comic or another she mentioned who are all fussed because, Ooh, someone said something remotely bad about something I read occasionally! But did someone really call for people to attack her there? I thought that sort of thing would be expected... the criticism, not the attacking. If I wore a pink petticoat backwards and stood on a corner holding a doberman in one hand and some sort of plumbing valve in the other, yes some people would call it art but I'd fully expect a lot of people would call me mental. I'm not saying the webcomic in question is equivalent to that, but I assumed people disliking what you do was sort of expected in the business.

What did they think would come of it, anyway? "Oho, good sir, I see you've called me a bitch. Well, I full retract my statement, your art is fantastic! Good show." Jules seems like a tough girl, I don't think she's going away.

Thats a great outcome. I'm a huge fan of Union of Heroes and the effort Tom Arne puts into the project. Behind the scenes he works like a demon on other projects. Hopefully we can get him on Pond 2 Pond for a chat.

It's no different on this side of the pond, brother. People are stoooopid. I disagree with most of her article. Order of the Stick is one of my favorite comics. It's the one that started me on my web comic sojourn. Just like it was your podcast that lead me to Marsh Comics. And it was her article that lead me to Union of Heroes. So it's all good. I respect her right to her opinion. It certainly won't stop me from enjoying her work. As far as some of the comments are concerned, a bash is not an opinion. It's just ignorance. Looking forward to your next update. Peace.
