Oh Alan! If only you had stopped off at your local BP and filled up! Could have picked up a copy of the Telegraph and a pork pie while you were at it as well. It is a long journey after all. It might be wise to say at this point that the views contained in this comic are not those of the author. If you detect some sort of bias then take that as you want but I reccomend that if you do take it, you take it with a good pinch of salt. What this page does throw up is an interesting question about traditional religious education regardless of the creed. My view is that if controlled correctly, religious schools be they Christian, Islamic or Jewish can be a moderate force for good.
I will make the point to those all too willing to start ranting about Madrassa being schools of extremism is that one reason why Ireland has had such a fractured and tortured couple of recent centuries has been the embedding of sectarianism and extremism into society by forcing children to go to school on the lines of their religion and not on the basis of ability. Religious schools are probably the worst thing to happen to Northern Ireland and the best way of killing sectarianism and extremism in my mind is to bring them under heavy restrictions and supervision. If that means familes there have to hold their noses and send their kids to a secular school rather than to their precious Catholic or Protestant schools then they should learn to share and play nice.
Well, while Kathy stews and Alan flails around at this debacle, I’m here to tell you that the last few days have been pretty busy and on the whole pretty good for me. I’m in good health, England are on top in the 2nd test and I enjoyed cocktails on Friday night with Alex. Splendid stuff I must say. But, a new week in this lovely summer heralds one thing and one thing only: a new page for Hard Graft!

…the term “dicker” and “dicked” is a slang term used by British soldiers when talking about enemy spotters and being spotted. Its use reached its zenith in Northern Ireland when an Army patrol would spot that they were being observed. Whether it were grown men watching from a bar or a building site or indeed a kid on a bike its the same the world over. The term has been “rediscovered” in Afghanistan since the resurgence of the Taliban.
In any case, things aren’t looking good for that small town/village. This page is going to serve as part of a series of pages illustrating the characters in the middle in what is right now a very bitter and dirty war between the two sides. Much like how The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was set in the middle of the mayhem and chaos of the US Civil War in fact.
Recently, I’ve gotten some feedback and questions about the grenade that was used in issue 1. The F1 grenade is a Soviet design from the 2nd World War which has since been out of production but has been copied across the world where there has been Soviet influence. The Chinese, Cubans and North Koreans for example made extensive copies and distributed them to their allies in Africa and East Asia. Many were given to the many and various combatants in Afghanistan through its long and brutal wars in the latter 20th century and are still being used against American, Commonwealth and NATO troops for example, these were confiscated by 45 Commando, Royal Marines when on patrol in Helmand province a few months ago:

The last few days haven’t exactly been my best I must admit as the heatwave that swept the nation kept me up all night. On the plus side, all the sweating lost me half a stone but on the negative side I look like a dead man due to lack of sleep. Turkish coffee from Tunisia is keeping me going (cheers Mum <3 ) and I’m managing to keep things going.
Oh! If I wanted to have a bottle of beer right now I’d have something REALLY bloody awesome to show you but I can’t because I’m on the wagon for the next 36 hours :’< maybe Friday.
On the good news side, the wallpaper is finally complete. Finally. We had to add holsters to our gal before we could proceed but I’m pleased with the results. Again this will be a donation wall but this is in colour this time. Seriously. I swear.
This brings me to my next announcement: The last page of this comic WILL be in colour. There. I said it. Hold me to this promise, fearless audience and flay me alive a thousand times if I fail to live up to it.
