Yes, well, we all saw that coming.
Well manipulating traffic lights, paying off the local police and trapping him between a rock and a hard place are all part of the job for these two although their methods do diverge slightly depending on their backgrounds. As for our Bratva man his day has gone from bad to worse. I hope his car is still there when/if he gets back.
Here in the UK, snow has given way to grim reality: rain. Things are pretty damp at the moment with all those lucky, lucky guys up north in Scotland getting all the snow and the 2,000m avalanches that come with it. Apparently Glencoe has more snow than any other resort in the world right now! All great fun. I could imagine people in Kent skiing on the South Downs back when it was really snowbound a couple of months ago.
Fan map update! Yet more people flood onto the map like they’re trying to get the last ‘chopper out of Saigon! So hello to Omegus in Iowa USA, HP & Jeff in Berlin Germany and Luke in the capital of billiards: Sheffield.
Pond to Pond #8 : Charity & comics, Marsh Rocket porn and obesity 101
February 24th, 2010 | by Pressyuk
Stumbling through your front door like the boyfriend who spent way too much time down the pub, Pond to Pond #8 is here!
This time we’re covering:
- How comics & charity go hand in hand covering campaigns such as the Comic Creators Alliance superb effort recently.
- How Marsh Rocket porn (especially Marsh & Victor Black) would be so awesome.
- How there are no fat people in Australia.
- How to smuggle wine into a music festival.
Listen below, download or check out iTunes!
And so, now that Alan has made sure his ribs aren’t broken, they conclude hiring negotiations and get down to business. If only all hiring was this awesome.
This concludes side story one. Now what seems to be on people’s minds recently is whats happened to German?! Well I can answer that question!
He’s been hard at work on issue 3 and on Friday and next Monday I’ll have some stuff to show you from what he’s done so far which has been absolutely superb. On top of this he’s been doodling the covers for the Hard Graft limited edition minibook and he also worked overtime to deliver the Kathy needed for the Comic Creators Alliance wallpaper.
Obviously though we all need our Hard Graft fix and at the same time we can work on explaining parts of the story which would otherwise be left to the sidelines. This is where Jules comes in.
In the end its a win win situation. We all get more Hard Graft from two top quality artists. Whats not to love about that?
Also got a few nice things to point out to readers!
We’ve got a Hard Graft Fan Map! If you like Hard Graft and want to tell the world where you are in the world follow the easy instructions to put your mark on the map! Its good fun but I can’t do much about the tiny map size :/
Next we have the formspring.me Hard Graft question widget! Got a question to ask either Prestwick, German or the cast? Then dump it here and we’ll do our best to get back to you. Also listed are previous questions and answers.
When I was a child, I was brought up to respect an opinion and respect the right of someone to voice that opinion. He or she may be right or they may be talking utter tripe but they have the right to say that. And trust me, in my household it was dog eat dog and if you either could not or would not stand by your opinions you will lose a debate but my family would always hear you out first. I have a lot of respect for that.
For example I respect the right of Hugo Chavez to have an hour long rant once or twice a week on his nice TV show Alo Presidente and on the opposite side of the political spectrum I respect the right of BNP Leader and arch-racist Nick Griffin to go on a national debate show in the UK to voice his foul politics.
What I do not respect is someone in academic authority who is behind a successful photo-comic/sketch page/whatever reading an opinion column which has the temerity to say that their comic is not a comic and then use his superior platform to galvanise his or her audience into attacking that column. That is utterly and completely wrong and someone in that position should know better.
My opinion? I don’t agree with Jules on some points. I think there are great and successful photo comics but I don’t think certain ones are comics rather they’re intelligent sketch pages such as those that belong in a well to do publication like Punch or The New Yorker.
But do I think she is arrogant, ignorant, idiotic, ridiculous or just plain bitchy? No! Because she presented her arguments calmly and logically from a professional point of view. That is her opinion guys deal with it. Don’t get angry, don’t shout at her because she decided to speak up, debate with her!
The treatment that she has received in the past 24 – 48 hours has been nothing short of shameful. She has been made to walk outside, stand on a chair be tarred and painted, bow for hours on end and wear a sign saying “I’m an idiot” while the baying mob (currently at 120 comments at the time of writing) criticize her endlessly and repeatedly.

We claim that we live in an enlightened and civilised society and that we enjoy the freedoms that people had died to defend time and time again. We look at the likes of China and scoff at their endless cycles of violence, mayhem and mob lynchings when we fail to realise that our own actions echo those very same horrible periods of history.
People should be made to read Li Zhensheng’s experiences and look at his photos. They should read abut the son whose father, the Helionjiang Party Secretary, was condemned and punished for days simply for being too old and “elitist” and how this son who tried to speak out, to voice his opinion, was gagged with a dirty sock and condemned himself.
Several days later he fell out of the window of the building he was being held at. The mob said it was suicide but in their hearts they know what really happened.
Today I look at that poor soul and I feel that he was the lucky one.
Pond to Pond #7 : Enemas, Drama Llamas and the Comic Creators Alliance.
January 11th, 2010 | by Pressyuk
As unwelcome as the sight of your mother in law announcing that she is staying for a week or two after Christmas, the latest Pond to Pond podcast is here!
So here it is, part one of the first Hard-Graft side story. Set in Prague we’re going to be following Bernadette for now. This page also sheds a bit of light into Bern’s mixed heritage, more of which we’ll see in the next few issues. This is drawn and inked by the Jules Rivera, destroyer of worlds and washer of plates! She’s actually running her very own Christmas/wintery storyline on her comic, Marsh Rocket. Go check it out and see what you think!
Meanwhile, we’ve got a vote incentive which is the draft colour of page 44. I think Rose Loughran’s colour work is absolutely superb as we can see in her comic, Red Moon Rising and when you see the completed results I’m sure you’ll agree. Again, apologies for the lateness but the results will be well worth it!
Finally, I’m announcing that I’ll be attending the 2010 Webcomix Thing at Mile End, London on the 27th of March. Tickets are only £3 and I’ll have a few goodies to give away to those smart enough to turn up in time so if you do pop along, swing by table 64 on your way to see Kate Beaton and say hi!

With the help of Daniel Bethel & Eben of Eben07.com, Prestwick & Jules talk about:
- Con report from APE 09 at San Francisco.
- Dave Cheung (uurrgh).
- Collectives: are they good or bad?
- After Party fun linkable here
Don’t forget, to listen you can either download directly, subsribe to iTunes or listen below!

Like a stoppable juggernaught meeting a movable object, Pond to Pond careers straight into it’s 5th episode. Tonight we’re chatting to Noel Curry better known for his gag a day/week strip DJ Bogtrotter!
In the resulting mele Jules, Pete & Noel chat about:
- Where our comics came from.
- 24 Hour comics day and what everyone did.
- Protestant Taliban.
- Comedy comics: how good (and awful) can they be?
Don’t forget, to listen you can either download directly, subsribe to iTunes or listen below!

Prestwick narrowly passed a fitness test of his own after suffering from a terrible bout of man flu (terrible I know). This week Pressy & Jules will be chatting about:
- Mobile apps and what they mean for webcomics.
- How injury or illness can mean better storylines and character development.
- Niche comics, how much Jules hates XKCD and how desperately disappointed Pressy was with Dresden Codak.
- General nostalgia for Top Gear.
To listen you can either download directly, subsribe to iTunes or listen below!
Pond to Pond #1 : Starting as a webcomic writer and Comic Con madness.
September 6th, 2009 | by Pressyuk
So myself & Jules Rivera of Marsh Rocket fame decided to make a podcast. Its pretty short (roughly about 30 minutes or so) and we cover a few topics mainly:
* Comic Con vendor musings.
* How to get an artist as a webcomic writer.
* Looking into particulars on Hard Graft.
We had a good laugh making it and we’re looking into making it a regular feature so why not check it out!
